The JCPOA Post-US Withdrawal: The Future of The Iran Deal and Consequences for UK and European Businesses

The implications of the US withdrawal on May 8th, 2018 for the UK and Europe were discussed by the evening's distinguished speakers: His Excellency Nicholas Hopton, outgoing UK Ambassador to Iran, Ms. Ellie Geranmayeh, Senior Policy Fellow for the Middle East and North Africa Programme at the European Council on Foreign Relations and Mr. Cyrus Ardalan, Chairman of Citigroup Global Markets, OakNorth Bank, IFFI, and former Vice-Chairman of Barclays Bank. Anjoman's very own Abbas Beyad chaired the evening's discussion.

The discussion included the UK's commitment to support domestic efforts to engage in business with Iran. Furthermore, the efforts the UK's European allies are taking in order to ensure that a reasonable economic package be provided for Iran were discussed in to ensure that a reasonable economic package be provided for Iran were discussed in detail. While there is great interest on the part of Europe to push for banking mechanisms to uphold the deal, the speakers acknowledged difficulty in counteracting the extent of secondary sanctions.
